Requirement for All Candidates to File
Every candidate for an election (including any candidate who withdraws
their nomination) and every registered third party advertiser is
required to file a campaign financial statement and where required, an
Auditor's Report disclosing all contributions and expenses for their
campaigns.
In 2026, the deadline to file Financial Statements will be Tuesday, March 30, 2027 by 2 PM.
Default Penalties
As per the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 s.88.23(2), any
candidate who does not file a financial statement by the March 30, 2027
deadline is in default and subject to the following penalties:
- the candidate forfeits any office to which he or she was elected and the office is deemed to be vacant; and
- until the next regular
election has taken place, the candidate is ineligible to be elected or
appointed to any office to which this Act applies.
