Student Bursary Award Program
The Student Bursary Award Program
supports local graduating students pursuing post-secondary education who demonstrate academic achievement, community involvement, and an interest in municipal government or public service.
Through this program, the Town of Kirkland Lake recognizes and supports students whose goals, leadership, and community involvement reflect the same spirit of civic pride and community contribution celebrated across the Town’s broader Nominations and Awards programs.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be graduating from Grade 12;
- attend École secondaire catholique l’Envolée du Nord (ESCEN) or Kirkland Lake District Composite School (KLDCS);
- be accepted into a full-time post-secondary program that is a minimum of two years in length beginning in the fall of the current year;
- demonstrate strong community involvement and leadership;
- complete the Town’s bursary application form; and
- show an interest in a future career in municipal government or public service.
Financial need may also be considered during the selection process.
Bursary Value
The bursary is valued at $1,000 annually and is typically awarded as follows:
- $500 to one student from ESCEN
- $500 to one student from KLDCS
If only one suitable recipient is identified in a given year, the full $1,000 may be awarded to that student.
Application Requirements
Applicants are required to submit:
- a completed Student Bursary Application Form;
- a copy of their post-secondary letter of acceptance; and
- an essay (maximum 1,200 words) outlining why they are the ideal candidate.
The essay may include:
- education and career goals;
- academic accomplishments;
- school-related activities;
- community involvement; and
- other relevant achievements or experiences.
Application Process
Completed applications must be submitted to the applicant’s school scholarship/bursary committee and/or student services representative.
Successful recipients will be required to provide proof of full-time enrolment prior to receiving the bursary. The award must be claimed within the recipient’s first year of post-secondary studies.
Program Conditions
- Municipal elected officials are not involved in evaluating or selecting recipients, except where acting in their professional capacity as educators.
- Children and grandchildren of Town administration/staff are not eligible.
